Moxibustion

Moxibustion at Fern Acupuncture & Family Wellness

Moxibustion (often referred to as moxa) is a traditional East Asian therapy that involves the therapeutic use of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to warm and stimulate specific acupuncture points. At Fern Acupuncture and Family Wellness, Dr. Elise Lasko practices direct moxibustion as part of her Classical Five Element Acupuncture treatments to enhance the effectiveness of each session and support the body’s innate healing capacity.

In Classical Five Element Acupuncture, small cones of moxa are placed directly on the skin at specific points and ignited briefly to create a gentle, warming sensation. This technique is used prior to needle insertion to activate and strengthen the point, tonify the underlying organ system, and restore energetic balance. Moxa not only increases circulation and warms areas of deficiency or cold, but also helps deepen the impact of the treatment on both physical and emotional levels.

Moxibustion may be used to support:

  • Cold or deficient conditions

  • Chronic fatigue or low energy

  • Menstrual irregularities or cramps

  • Digestive weakness

  • Immune support and prevention of seasonal illness

  • Emotional imbalances such as grief, anxiety, or lack of motivation

  • Pain syndromes with cold, stiffness, or tightness

Many patients find the experience of moxa to be deeply comforting—like a gentle internal warmth that radiates from within. It’s particularly beneficial in colder months or for anyone who tends to feel cold, depleted, or energetically low.

Moxa is offered as needed during acupuncture treatments, based on your condition and the season, and is always tailored to your unique constitution and goals.
